So You Want to Build a Mandalorian

If you are a fan of Star Wars, the Fett’s, Mandalorians in general, or just a costume fanatic, it is definitely possible to build a Mandalorian costume. There are just a few things you need to consider before you get started:
First, ask yourself what level of costume you want:
Canon Quality: These costumes are screen accurate. They attempt, in every way, to completely reproduce a Star Wars character from film or print.
Emulative Quality: These costumes attempt to reproduce a specific Star Wars character or group, but do not focus as greatly on the minute details.
Custom Quality: These costumes are loosely based on a character or group from the Star Wars genre but do not replicate anything in particular.
Next, ask yourself what sort of resources you have available:
You can make any level of costume with almost any resources, provided you have the time, skill, and/or friends who can do it for you. The more money you have, the faster things are likely to progress as you can buy pieces from reputable builders. Yet, it is possible to build a canon quality costume on a shoe-string budget if you spread the expense out over time and do most of the work yourself. It is really just a matter of your personal preference and costuming goals.
From that point you can move forward with your build!
Whichever path you choose, The Dented Helmet  is a great resource for all things Mandalorian. There is an extensive forum with tons of information, patterns, and advice. I will be building pages for Death Watch specific costumes but will contain some links to important posts and patterns that may be useful to any build. However,  I highly suggest you sign up and do some searching yourself.
The Mandalorian Mercs are the “elite Mandalorian costuming organisation” focusing on the Star Wars Universe, including “Canon outfits, any Mandalorian mentioned in the
Star Wars novels and/or graphic novels as well as the Mandalorians portrayed on
the Clone Wars Cartoons.”
Finally, the 501st Legion is the premier costuming guild for Imperial fans.  They have clear and specific guidelines as to what they are looking for in the costume reference library. Mandalorians generally fall under the purview of the Bounty Hunter’s Guild  so if you are interested in this type of costume, I suggest you head on over and join their forum.
I am new to the process but am happy to offer any suggestions or references I have discovered along the way. Feel free to contact me with questions, comments, or advice!
